Zen people will recognize this as an alternate title for Dogen’s Genjo Koan. He wrote about practice and enlightenment, how the world actually works, and all that. My intention is more modest. I write about this particular moment, in our lives and in the world, and a few things I’m doing and inviting you to join.
While northern Minnesota and Canada were on fire, here in southern Minnesota I had no smoke, just the heat that has become normal, and indoors stayed comfortable without air conditioning. Grass, garden plants, and “weeds” are growing insanely, calling on me to mow, water, weed, and harvest. While Ice continues to kidnap and brutalize brown people and random others, while the would-be dictator threatens, I get to just live my life. But that life must include hands-on involvement with the world. That’s my focus this writing.
Here are some of the things I’m doing now, and invitations.
Classic MWA activities, both on July 19
July 19: Ceremony Sunday at 1, in a quiet Minneapolis park north of Lake of the Isles, a few of us are gathering to offer ceremony on behalf of the change in consciousness that is moving, that we need, that could turn the world – according to the astrologers. We’ll start the gathering with more information. If interested, contact me today (Saturday) or text me on Sunday morning, for location and more details. Dress for the weather. An hour or two. If you want, check air quality at https://webapp.pca.state.mn.us/aqistats/chart.
July 19: Dharma talk Sunday morning at 10 I’m giving a dharma talk at Minnesota Zen Center, 3343 East Bde Mka Ska Parkway in Minneapolis. Silent meditation at 9:10 or 9:30, talk starts at 10:10.
Local actions for the earth: grounded work that supports the spiritual work.
Both Northfield Indivisible (see Facebook for events) and Faribault Indivisible (Facebook only) are active in protecting the earth and protecting humanity. My time has mostly gone into stopping the Faribault data center, longer focus is on defending and creating real democracy through neighborhood groups.
Land:
August 8 is a day-long work event with Clean River Partners, clearing invasives, planting grass as part of restoration, plus making biochar (fire!!). Come and go as you like. 9:30-3:30. Register here: https://www.cleanriverpartners.org/events/volunteer-mwa.
I’m looking for some people who’d like to spend time with the land – gardening, gathering firewood, whatever. Sharing produce and plants is part of the plan. Let me know if you’re interested, and we can find a pattern that works, weekly or otherwise. (I have one current volunteer, and know there are others out there.)
I’m reading Rutger Bregman’s new book. Next week I’ll share some reading notes having to do with how people become the ones who step up and respond, rather than watch and feel helpless. And a short talk by him.
I’m also looking for a volunteer who can edit audio and video tapes, taking some of my 30-60 minute talks and creating shorter clips.
May you all be well and safe, in body and spirit, may your loved ones be well, and may you rest in the confidence that comes from listening to the call of your heart.
Love to all,
Shodo
