Each Moment is the Universe: Online class January 4 to March 15

We will study Dainin Katagiri’s book Each Moment is the Universe, a commentary on “Being Time” by Eihei Dogen, the thirteenth-century founder of Soto Zen. The book portrays impermanence as a source of joy and liveliness, and explores the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. The subject matter is deep yet accessible; beginners are welcome.

Each class will include lecture, guided discussion, and sometimes practice-experiments.

Classes will be Wednesday evenings, the first three Wednesdays of each month, beginning at 6:30pm Central Time and ending at 8pm. Silent meditation begins at 6:00pm; please arrive any time between 6 and 6:30.

Class size is limited to 20; preference will be given to those who can commit to full attendance. Please register as soon as possible.

You can order the book from your local bookstore, or from the publisher here: https://www.shambhala.com/each-moment-is-the-universe-519.html. A second book resource is the new Being Time by Shinshu Roberts, available from the publisher at https://wisdomexperience.org/product/being-time/. I’ll also be teaching from my study notes from Shohaku Okumura’s teaching of Uji in 2004. It would be helpful to have at least one of the two books to read, and it’s okay to begin without having a book in hand.

As the lead teacher of this class, I recall my early days studying with Katagiri-roshi: the vigor of his lectures, his laughter, his enthusiasm, his stories. I’ll be assisted by Jaime Ianiro, who has studied with me for three years and practiced Zen for some years before we met.

The Dharma by its nature must be offered freely; yet it costs time and money to prepare and teach these classes. Voluntary donations are invited at the time of registration or later.

Instead of using a registration form, please email me with the following information:

  • Your name and location
  • Dates you will attend
  • amount of donation/fee, if any (not tax deductible)
  • a word or two about your experience level: beginner, middle, advanced, just to help me with appropriate instruction
  • Your community of practice, if any

Use our donation page to send your contribution, and mark it as related to this class.

I’ll reply to acknowledge your registration, let you know whether you’re accepted or on the waiting list, and send a link to join the class.
