SUMMARY:Each Moment is the Universe: Online class January 4 to March 15
DESCRIPTION:We will study Dainin Katagiri’s book Each Moment is the Universe\, a commentary on “Being Time” by Eihei Dogen\, the thirteenth-century founder of Soto Zen. The book portrays impermanence as a source of joy and liveliness\, and explores the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. The subject matter is deep yet accessible; beginners are welcome. \nEach class will include lecture\, guided discussion\, and sometimes practice-experiments. \nClasses will be Wednesday evenings\, the first three Wednesdays of each month\, beginning at 6:30pm Central Time and ending at 8pm. Silent meditation begins at 6:00pm; please arrive any time between 6 and 6:30. \nClass size is limited to 20; preference will be given to those who can commit to full attendance. Please register as soon as possible. \nYou can order the book from your local bookstore\, or from the publisher here: https://www.shambhala.com/each-moment-is-the-universe-519.html. A second book resource is the new Being Time by Shinshu Roberts\, available from the publisher at https://wisdomexperience.org/product/being-time/. I’ll also be teaching from my study notes from Shohaku Okumura’s teaching of Uji in 2004. It would be helpful to have at least one of the two books to read\, and it’s okay to begin without having a book in hand. \nAs the lead teacher of this class\, I recall my early days studying with Katagiri-roshi: the vigor of his lectures\, his laughter\, his enthusiasm\, his stories. I’ll be assisted by Jaime Ianiro\, who has studied with me for three years and practiced Zen for some years before we met. \nThe Dharma by its nature must be offered freely; yet it costs time and money to prepare and teach these classes. DESCRIPTION:Sometimes we feel a longing to gather with close friends and neighbors around our deepest concerns\, Thus we invite you to join us in a listening circle\, Sunday January 22\, 4 pm with potluck at 6. Deep listening\, opening to wisdom\, clarifying intention. “What is mine to do?” could be our guiding question for this meeting. Then\, if we choose\, we may meet again\, monthly or as guided. \nLocation will be in Northfield\, in-person only\, at the Northfield Buddhist Meditation Center. Up a level behind 313 Division St\, on the alley.\nThere’s no kitchen\, so potluck is cold food or creativity. \nPlease reply if coming.  Questions welcome. \n
