Any donations will go to Perry for his work and expertise. He’s been collecting wood for a while now\, and you can see the current inoculated pile. \nYou can also buy inoculated biochar from us\, ready for your garden\, or raw biochar from the day’s work. Bring a container. \n  \nSupper will involve foraged foods\, potluck\, possibly grilling over the biochar fire\, and so forth. The famous nettle soup is a likely part. \nHere is basic information including parking\, directions\, and so forth. We’ll have bug stuff available if needed. \n

SUMMARY:Rohatsu Sesshin - December 1-8 2024
DESCRIPTION:There is a space where the whole universe comes together.\nIn a Zen sesshin (“to settle the mind”)\, we enter that space\, sitting quietly together for long stretches of time\, allowing it to settle into our bones and bodies. It’s simple and often challenging. It can become a sort of adventure in discovering ourselves. It’s also a way of giving our support to the universe\, including all the human activities and difficulties\, while accepting the way it gives life to all of us. \nSaturday November 30\, 7 pm – Sunday December 8\, 9:30 am\nThis is the traditional week-long sesshin honoring Buddha’s enlightenment.\n\nSitting and walking meditation for 12 hours a day in silence\, indoors or outdoors. Cooking and other tasks will be shared on a volunteer basis. Simple vegetarian meals are included.\nFirst night is arrival and settling in; orientation will be in the morning after breakfast.\nThere may be words of encouragement\, additional orientation sessions\, or other teaching support as needed\, in context of a primarily silent week.\nPrivate interviews are available immediately after the closing circle.\nPartial participation is possible\, see below.\nSimple sleeping accommodations are offered; commuting is possible but discouraged.\nPlease contact Shodo with questions or to arrange part-time or commuting participation.\n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFull-time Schedule \n\nOn Saturday 11/30\, arrive 7-8 pm\, to settle in before night.\nSunday 12/1\, zazen at 6 and 7\, breakfast at 8\, orientation at 9\, then the usual schedule.\nFrom 12/2 to 12/7: zazen at 6\, 7\, 9\, 10\, 11\, afternoon 1\, 2\, 3\, 4\, 5 and evening 7\, 8. Three meals in the breaks\, silent\, informal.\n12/8: Zazen at 6 and 7 am\, breakfast at 8\, closing circle at 9\, followed by private interviews if requested.\nEach period is 50 minutes\, followed by 10 minutes of kinhin (walking meditation). Leave a note if you need to nap\, do walking instead of sitting\, or leave the schedule in any way\, including ending sooner than planned.\n\nPart-timers \n\nPeople with meditation experience are welcome to drop in for a few hours.\nIf you are coming for a time that includes a meal or an overnight\, we need registration (after contacting Shodo as above).\nPlease arrive during walking meditation – the 10 minutes before each hour – or during a meal break. Plan on silence while here.\n\nNOTES: \n\nRegistration is required\, one week in advance. Retreats are held at a private home on a 17-acre farm\, an hour south of Minneapolis\, on the Cannon River.\nLeader is Shodo Spring\, dharma heir of Shohaku Okumura and founder of Mountains and Waters Alliance (MountainsandWatersAlliance.org)\nFees are minimal – $40/day early registration includes food and lodging; donations support the teacher in the ancient tradition called dana.*\nFeel free to ask questions. Driving directions and other information will be sent. If you would like to arrive early or stay late\, please ask.\nSee the Covid page for current Covid precautions. See Visitor Information for various practical things\, directions\, parking\, environmental and other lifestyle matters (more than you want\, probably).\nIf you have not been here before\, if you have never sat sesshin before\, or if you have health concerns\, please contact Shodo before registering.\nThere will be no incense and no fragrance. Outdoor walking meditation is available. Limit 10 full-time registrants.\n\n*Dana is important. Shodo supports the teaching through an outside job and a minimalist lifestyle\, and will miss a week’s pay. Suggested retreat donation is $40/day\, which only covers tangible costs (food and shelter). Additional donations support her effort and preparation\, and also help those who cannot pay. No one is turned away for lack of funds. \n\n \n EmailThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Your Full Name*Email*\n \n Phone*Date and Hours attending (if you are not attending the full event)I am...*\n \n \n Paying COST ONLY today ($30/day)\n \n \n \n Paying RECOMMENDED amount ($40/day)\n \n \n \n Paying SUPPORTER amount today ($50/day)\n \n \n \n Your Choice (from $0 to infinity)\n \n \n \n Paying a deposit today and the balance when I arrive\n Cost Only is $30/day QuantityThis covers only our costs feed and house you - This is a 7 day sesshin\, Under quantity\, enter 7 if you will attend the whole event. SUMMARY:Winter Solstice bonfire and potluck
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice this year is Saturday\, December 21.\nThe core is the bonfire and potluck\n4-7 pm\, child-friendly. We’ll include a simple ritual of looking back and forward at our lives\, and send loving-kindness. Potluck is presumably indoors. (If weather is terrible\, the fire will also be indoors; if it’s cold we can do rituals indoors.) \nDaytime extras:\nFrom 10-4\, you’re welcome to join us and help put this together. Outdoors is gathering firewood and organizing comfortable seating\, blankets\, lights\, safe walking\, etc.  Indoors will be about food: making cookies and treats\, real food\, getting things ready to be together. \nSleeping over is welcome\, for children\, adults\, and families. \nEvening extras:\nPerhaps we’ll gather again around the fire and do prayers\, blessings\, chanting\, poetry reading\, particularly for this world which seems to be changing. Perhaps we’ll have meditation instruction and do sitting and walking meditation. Perhaps some of us will join the old tradition of sitting with the fire all night – taking turns an hour at a time – until morning arrives – and celebrate the dawn together. \nPractical notes:\nPlease email me to let me know who’s coming\, for which time (bonfire\, day\, evening) and how many\, along with possible special needs. (e.g. 3 adults\, 1 small child\, need nap space – or 4 10-year-old wild kids\, need activities\, or “can’t eat gluten” etc.) We’ll do whatever is needed with this information. It’s okay to send a “maybe” and fill it in later. \nKid notes:\nIf we have a lot of children\, I’ll look into hiring a child care professional. Or we can organize taking turns. \nDirections\, parking\, and other stuff are here: \nPast visitors will be pleased to know that the stairs now have a handrail and are safe.

SUMMARY:Tree planting Friday\, April 4\, 3-7
DESCRIPTION:We are digging and replanting some small white pine trees.\nThe magnificent white pine stand has created a lot of little trees\, that need to be moved for their own health and to protect the neighbors’ driveway. We’ll move some to repair tornado damage and begin a privacy screen\, and give some away. \nNotes:\n\nDon’t use the registration form\, just email me. Tell me what hours you plan to come. I’ll send directions to everyone who contacts.\nWear sturdy shoes. If you have a favorite shovel or favorite gloves\, bring them; otherwise we provide. I recommend avoiding fuzzy clothes\, which pick up burrs and stuff. Jeans and a shirt are good\, and I can lend appropriate thing.\nIf you would like to take home a little pine tree\, you might bring a bucket or plant pot. A 5-gallon bucket would be enough for the biggest trees.\nIf you want to come early\, you can join us in finding where to plant\, or help with supper prep. The time is organized for people who work regular jobs.\nThere will be food\, and probably some of us will stay until dark.\nWeather forecast is over 50 for that afternoon.
