SUMMARY:Tree planting Friday\, April 4\, 3-7
DESCRIPTION:We are digging and replanting some small white pine trees.\nThe magnificent white pine stand has created a lot of little trees\, that need to be moved for their own health and to protect the neighbors’ driveway. We’ll move some to repair tornado damage and begin a privacy screen\, and give some away. \nNotes:\n\nDon’t use the registration form\, just email me. Tell me what hours you plan to come. I’ll send directions to everyone who contacts.\nWear sturdy shoes. If you have a favorite shovel or favorite gloves\, bring them; otherwise we provide. I recommend avoiding fuzzy clothes\, which pick up burrs and stuff. Jeans and a shirt are good\, and I can lend appropriate thing.\nIf you would like to take home a little pine tree\, you might bring a bucket or plant pot. A 5-gallon bucket would be enough for the biggest trees.\nIf you want to come early\, you can join us in finding where to plant\, or help with supper prep. The time is organized for people who work regular jobs.\nThere will be food\, and probably some of us will stay until dark.\nWeather forecast is over 50 for that afternoon.

SUMMARY:Winter Solstice bonfire and potluck
DESCRIPTION:Winter solstice this year is Saturday\, December 21.\nThe core is the bonfire and potluck\n4-7 pm\, child-friendly. We’ll include a simple ritual of looking back and forward at our lives\, and send loving-kindness. Potluck is presumably indoors. (If weather is terrible\, the fire will also be indoors; if it’s cold we can do rituals indoors.) \nDaytime extras:\nFrom 10-4\, you’re welcome to join us and help put this together. Outdoors is gathering firewood and organizing comfortable seating\, blankets\, lights\, safe walking\, etc.  Indoors will be about food: making cookies and treats\, real food\, getting things ready to be together. \nSleeping over is welcome\, for children\, adults\, and families. \nEvening extras:\nPerhaps we’ll gather again around the fire and do prayers\, blessings\, chanting\, poetry reading\, particularly for this world which seems to be changing. Perhaps we’ll have meditation instruction and do sitting and walking meditation. Perhaps some of us will join the old tradition of sitting with the fire all night – taking turns an hour at a time – until morning arrives – and celebrate the dawn together. \nPractical notes:\nPlease email me to let me know who’s coming\, for which time (bonfire\, day\, evening) and how many\, along with possible special needs. (e.g. 3 adults\, 1 small child\, need nap space – or 4 10-year-old wild kids\, need activities\, or “can’t eat gluten” etc.) We’ll do whatever is needed with this information. It’s okay to send a “maybe” and fill it in later. \nKid notes:\nIf we have a lot of children\, I’ll look into hiring a child care professional. Or we can organize taking turns. \nDirections\, parking\, and other stuff are here: \nPast visitors will be pleased to know that the stairs now have a handrail and are safe.

SUMMARY:Rohatsu Sesshin - December 1-8 2024
DESCRIPTION:There is a space where the whole universe comes together.\nIn a Zen sesshin (“to settle the mind”)\, we enter that space\, sitting quietly together for long stretches of time\, allowing it to settle into our bones and bodies. It’s simple and often challenging. It can become a sort of adventure in discovering ourselves. It’s also a way of giving our support to the universe\, including all the human activities and difficulties\, while accepting the way it gives life to all of us. \nSaturday November 30\, 7 pm – Sunday December 8\, 9:30 am\nThis is the traditional week-long sesshin honoring Buddha’s enlightenment.\n\nSitting and walking meditation for 12 hours a day in silence\, indoors or outdoors. Cooking and other tasks will be shared on a volunteer basis. Simple vegetarian meals are included.\nFirst night is arrival and settling in; orientation will be in the morning after breakfast.\nThere may be words of encouragement\, additional orientation sessions\, or other teaching support as needed\, in context of a primarily silent week.\nPrivate interviews are available immediately after the closing circle.\nPartial participation is possible\, see below.\nSimple sleeping accommodations are offered; commuting is possible but discouraged.\nPlease contact Shodo with questions or to arrange part-time or commuting participation.\n\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nFull-time Schedule \n\nOn Saturday 11/30\, arrive 7-8 pm\, to settle in before night.\nSunday 12/1\, zazen at 6 and 7\, breakfast at 8\, orientation at 9\, then the usual schedule.\nFrom 12/2 to 12/7: zazen at 6\, 7\, 9\, 10\, 11\, afternoon 1\, 2\, 3\, 4\, 5 and evening 7\, 8. Three meals in the breaks\, silent\, informal.\n12/8: Zazen at 6 and 7 am\, breakfast at 8\, closing circle at 9\, followed by private interviews if requested.\nEach period is 50 minutes\, followed by 10 minutes of kinhin (walking meditation). Leave a note if you need to nap\, do walking instead of sitting\, or leave the schedule in any way\, including ending sooner than planned.\n\nPart-timers \n\nPeople with meditation experience are welcome to drop in for a few hours.\nIf you are coming for a time that includes a meal or an overnight\, we need registration (after contacting Shodo as above).\nPlease arrive during walking meditation – the 10 minutes before each hour – or during a meal break. Plan on silence while here.\n\nNOTES: \n\nRegistration is required\, one week in advance. Retreats are held at a private home on a 17-acre farm\, an hour south of Minneapolis\, on the Cannon River.\nLeader is Shodo Spring\, dharma heir of Shohaku Okumura and founder of Mountains and Waters Alliance (MountainsandWatersAlliance.org)\nFees are minimal – $40/day early registration includes food and lodging; donations support the teacher in the ancient tradition called dana.*\nFeel free to ask questions. Driving directions and other information will be sent. If you would like to arrive early or stay late\, please ask.\nSee the Covid page for current Covid precautions. See Visitor Information for various practical things\, directions\, parking\, environmental and other lifestyle matters (more than you want\, probably).\nIf you have not been here before\, if you have never sat sesshin before\, or if you have health concerns\, please contact Shodo before registering.\nThere will be no incense and no fragrance. Outdoor walking meditation is available. Limit 10 full-time registrants.\n\n*Dana is important. Shodo supports the teaching through an outside job and a minimalist lifestyle\, and will miss a week’s pay. Suggested retreat donation is $40/day\, which only covers tangible costs (food and shelter). Additional donations support her effort and preparation\, and also help those who cannot pay. No one is turned away for lack of funds. \n\n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Your Full Name*Email*\n \n Phone*Date and Hours attending (if you are not attending the full event)I am...*\n \n \n Paying COST ONLY today ($30/day)\n \n \n \n Paying RECOMMENDED amount ($40/day)\n \n \n \n Paying SUPPORTER amount today ($50/day)\n \n \n \n Your Choice (from $0 to infinity)\n \n \n \n Paying a deposit today and the balance when I arrive\n Cost Only is $30/day QuantityThis covers only our costs feed and house you - This is a 7 day sesshin\, Under quantity\, enter 7 if you will attend the whole event. SUMMARY:Saturday August 12: Blessing ceremony with Sun\, sky\, land\, and meteor shower
DESCRIPTION:We begin by offering our love to the land in hands-on work\, then potluck together\, then gather on the lawn to offer healing energy to all beings\, in this time of crisis. Those who wish may stay and watch the Perseid meteor shower\, the moonrise\, and perhaps greet the morning together.\n\nThis was inspired by the fact that this is the peak night for the Perseid meteor showers\, the night is dark\, weather forecast is beautiful\, and we live in a quiet and dark place. And I haven’t had a retreat or work day all summer. So this is a beginning of returning to our shared life here. \nPlease come for any part or all. Bring friends. Let me know\, for logistics; there’s a registration form. We’ll also communicate by email beforehand. \nIf you’d like to come early and help prepare\, or help with farm projects\, let me know. (We do have some carpentry projects and some chainsaw projects.) Here’s the overall plan: \n\n2-3 arrival\, get settled\, set up a tent or find a sleeping spot if you like\n3-6 outdoor work in the spirit of land care – listening\, following – probably in the garden\, possibly in woods or fields\, possibly harvesting.\n6-7 potluck\n7-9 ceremony with plants and unknown beings.\n\nFor some time now\, I’ve been envisioning gathering together as humans in relationship with all the other beings – plants\, animals\, insects\, minerals\, waters – listening\, blessing\, and opening the possibility of unlocking healing in this world and its crisis. If you’d like to offer a poem or something\, let me know so I can include your gift. \n\n9-10 open time\, quiet time\, preparation – get your blanket\, adjust your eyes to the dark\, etc.\n10:15 watching meteor showers: These folks predict excellent viewing conditions and weather forecast is pleasant. I’m thinking to continue the ceremony and include the meteors and the moon.\n2:05: a sliver of moon rises\, for those still awake to see it.\nAny time: nap or bedtime whenever you like. Let me know if you’d like to camp or to sleep in the house. If you’d rather go home\, of course that’s fine. We’ll sort out breakfast when we wake.\n\nI hope you can come. There’s a registration form – just use it to let me know your general plans about coming and going. \nLove\, \nShodo \n

SUMMARY:Land Care Retreat April 2023
DESCRIPTION:The land care retreat is a tradition here. Expect a combination of meditation practice\, dharma talks and discussions\, and work with the land as teacher\, opening ourselves to kindness and love of all beings. It’s a good introduction to the particular practice of Mountains and Waters Alliance\, also a gentle introduction to Zen practice and a time to settle in with the land. There will be free time for walking outdoors or sitting by the fire. \nWe’ll begin Friday evening with introductions\, introductory dharma talk\, and discussion. Saturday morning will include sitting meditation\, dharma talk\, and breakfast. After lunch we’ll do our work project\, engaging with the work in a spiritual manner\, learning from the land and beings\, with a break before supper. Evening will include more meditation and dharma conversation. Sunday combines the same components\, ending with a closing circle. \nThe retreat includes meals and optional simple lodging\, requires a fee\, and definitely requires registration (see below). \nWe’re planning to do garden work\, possibly planting the peas or other things in the newly-soft earth. \nFees are $40/day; donations for the teacher are welcome. \nFor basic information about coming to the farm\, see here. Covid safety information will be updated as needed. SUMMARY:Weekend Sesshin February 2023
DESCRIPTION:In sesshin\, we let in the support of the whole universe. This can feel profound or ordinary; it is actually extraordinary.\nWe gather in person to sit together for twelve hours a day in stillness. In this tradition\, we begin at 6 am and end at 8:50 pm\, with 50 minutes sitting alternating with 10 minutes walking\, plus three meals and a little shared work. \nWe arrive Friday evening after supper – just a chance to get settled before night. Sesshin begins Saturday morning and ends Sunday at three with a closing circle. Private interviews may be held after the closing. \nGuidelines:\nIf you’ve never done a meditation retreat before\, we’ll have a conversation to find out whether this will work. Usually people start with something easier\, yet sometimes it works out fine. Contact Shodo to set up that conversation. \nIt’s okay to do walking meditation or to take a break if tired. \nWe’re fragrance free and don’t use incense\, for the sake of accessibility. For mobility concerns\, please ask. \nRegistration is required two weeks in advance\, whether full time\, part time\, or commuting. $40/day for costs; please also offer a donation for the teacher. For questions contact Shodo. \n\n \n NameThis field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.Your Full Name*Email*\n \n Phone*Date and Hours attending (if you are not attending the full event)I am...*\n \n \n Paying today to attend this event\n \n \n \n Paying a deposit today and the balance when I arrive\n \n \n \n Requesting to do work exchange for attending\n How many days will you be attending? Deep listening\, opening to wisdom\, clarifying intention. “What is mine to do?” could be our guiding question for this meeting. Up a level behind 313 Division St\, on the alley.\nThere’s no kitchen\, so potluck is cold food or creativity. \nPlease reply if coming.  Questions welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Each Moment is the Universe: Online class January 4 to March 15
DESCRIPTION:We will study Dainin Katagiri’s book Each Moment is the Universe\, a commentary on “Being Time” by Eihei Dogen\, the thirteenth-century founder of Soto Zen. The book portrays impermanence as a source of joy and liveliness\, and explores the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. The subject matter is deep yet accessible; beginners are welcome. \nEach class will include lecture\, guided discussion\, and sometimes practice-experiments. \nClasses will be Wednesday evenings\, the first three Wednesdays of each month\, beginning at 6:30pm Central Time and ending at 8pm. Silent meditation begins at 6:00pm; please arrive any time between 6 and 6:30. \nClass size is limited to 20; preference will be given to those who can commit to full attendance. Please register as soon as possible. \nYou can order the book from your local bookstore\, or from the publisher here: https://www.shambhala.com/each-moment-is-the-universe-519.html. A second book resource is the new Being Time by Shinshu Roberts\, available from the publisher at https://wisdomexperience.org/product/being-time/. I’ll also be teaching from my study notes from Shohaku Okumura’s teaching of Uji in 2004. It would be helpful to have at least one of the two books to read\, and it’s okay to begin without having a book in hand. \nAs the lead teacher of this class\, I recall my early days studying with Katagiri-roshi: the vigor of his lectures\, his laughter\, his enthusiasm\, his stories. I’ll be assisted by Jaime Ianiro\, who has studied with me for three years and practiced Zen for some years before we met. \nThe Dharma by its nature must be offered freely; yet it costs time and money to prepare and teach these classes. Voluntary donations are invited at the time of registration or later. \nInstead of using a registration form\, please email me with the following information: \n\nYour name and location\nDates you will attend\namount of donation/fee\, if any (not tax deductible)\na word or two about your experience level: beginner\, middle\, advanced\, just to help me with appropriate instruction\nYour community of practice\, if any\n\nUse our donation page to send your contribution\, and mark it as related to this class. \nI’ll reply to acknowledge your registration\, let you know whether you’re accepted or on the waiting list\, and send a link to join the class.

SUMMARY:Call for prayer supporting Black Hills - September 6\, 2 pm Mountain Time
DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends\, \nIf you are free this afternoon (or whatever time it is where you are)\, I ask you to join in ceremony\, prayer\, chanting\, any offering of spirit\, in support of Karen Little Thunder and others who will be offering traditional Lakota prayer outside the Federal courthouse in Rapid City. At stake is illegal or semi-legal lithium mining in the Black Hills. \nHere is a link to more information about the court case\, from the Black Hills Clean Water Alliance. \nIn addition\, an ordinance controlling “hard rock mining” is being considered in the county where mines are threatened or begun. Here is a link to that information. Even though they have already started\, you could include that in your action. \nThe request is for the MWA community to join in the prayers\, from wherever you are\, and however you pray. It’s good if you can be by water\, but no matter. I will be here at a place called the Central Altar\, by a creek\, at a rock face full of spirit\, offering meditation\, prayer\, and chanting on behalf of the place\, He Sapa\, which we know as the Black Hills. If you can join with others near you\, so much the better\, but we are all joined. \nMountains and Waters Alliance has many shapes; this one is our protection of the earth through raising energy. Sometimes I ask the earth to protect herself\, and that is what I will be doing today. \nIf you join me or if you share this\, I’ll be happy to know it\, and can share it with Karen\, who asked me to share widely. \n  \nWarmly\, \nShodo \n  \n  \nFederal Level Comment Notices

SUMMARY:Open house at the farm - Labor Day\, September 5. 1-4 pm
DESCRIPTION:Dear Folks: \nThe open house is  September 5\, Labor Day 1-4 pm. I hope you can come. Bring friends if you like. There will be snacks. \nThe new living room.\nThe time from 1-2 is accessible for people with special covid concerns; please everyone wear a mask indoors. \n2-4 just drop in and see the house\, the new spaces plus what you all have done; maybe also go for a walk outdoors and see the flowers and plants so many of you have given. \nAt 4 I’ll offer brief Zen meditation instruction for those interested. \nWe’ve been here seven years. A lot has changed. A few years ago we created a meditation hall (zendo) in the basement\, which has been used since then for retreats\, meditation\, classes\, and some online events. This spring we expanded the first floor to add windows and sleeping space for guests and new residents. The outdoors continues to evolve\, now including gardens and trails\, and now some native prairie development. \nTours indoors and out\, as we like. \nSome covid safety thoughts (so sad but seems necessary) \n\nPeople who are covid-vulnerable or care for vulnerable people are welcome to come 1-2; masks will be required indoors during that time. You can tour the house safely and stay as long as you feel comfortable.\nEveryone else in general\, feel free to visit 2-4\, look around the house\,  visit the creek or the river\, and socialize.\nOf course\, if you’ve been exposed to covid or if you are sick\, please stay home to protect everyone.\n\nRSVP is encouraged but not required. Helpful comments include how many people\, whether you need the “safe” time of 1-2\, and if you’re thinking about staying for the intro session. \nGetting here: Please read the DIRECTIONS and PARKING sections of this page:  Visitor information  And park on the left before the house\, on the grass. On the actual day\, call or text me at 507-384-8541\, I’ll do my best to answer.

SUMMARY:Spring Cleanup Day May 21\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:This is a volunteer day in beautiful late May – Saturday May 21. We always enjoy these times. \n\nIf we’re lucky\, the house construction is finished and we can move furniture into place and set up a much more beautiful gathering space.\nIf the construction isn’t finished\, we’ll do garden prep and outdoor cleanup. There is a small building project possible for those so inclined.\n\nEither way\, no particular skills or strength required; you’re welcome and there is a way to contribute. \nREGISTRATION IS ESSENTIAL! because I’ll be preparing lunch and snacks\, and planning work projects. You can email me or use the form below\, ignoring irrelevant items (which is most of them)\, and check “work exchange” in the fee section. (There is no charge\, but sometimes we have technical problems.) Directions and parking instructions are at the links below. \nWe’ll update the Covid stuff in mid-May. Basically we’re trying to arrange it so everyone can feel safe without masks. Even people with health challenges. \nADDITIONAL OPTIONS: \nIf you can’t come Saturday\, or want to avoid covid contacts contact me about doing Friday instead\, or another day. It would be great to have a small group (or just you) for the afternoon or whatever works. \nSaturday evening you’re invited to stay and socialize; I’ll do dinner\, potluck contributions are welcome but not required. SUMMARY:The Gift of Fearlessness: 2nd & 4th Tuesday evenings 7:00-8:30 CT
DESCRIPTION:The Gift of Fearlessness: walking together\n7:00-8:30 pm Central Time\, 2nd & 4th Tuesday evenings\nWe started with the pandemic. Today climate is more frightening\, and polarization including war in the Middle East. How do we respond? \nA few things are known: calming down helps; community helps; a vision or direction for the future helps; taking action helps. \nWe meet regularly\, and most of us come most times. Our gatherings combine meditation\, information gathering\, discussion\, speculation\, and support. It’s a gathering of friends\, not a polished presentation. We’re just walking the road together. \nWe’re open to adding new people. To sign up\, or to ask questions\, email Shodo. If you’d like geographical connection – some of us are in southern Minnesota\, also Montana and the east coast. \n  \nThis is an ONLINE meeting using Zoom –  please go here https://zoom.us/j/91552957428 to join us. \nThe password is Zen\,  you shouldn’t need to download Zoom\, but please give yourself 5 minutes extra to figure it out the first time. You can enter early. \n  \nFee:  No charge. If you want to donate\, Click Here to go to Donate to MWA \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n
