Earth Apprentice Retreat – July 19-21
We apprentice ourselves to the living earth around us.
We ask help from river, creeks, hills and sandstone bluffs, maples and buckthorn and berries, grasses, mosquitoes, eagles and deer.
We listen to their reply and act on their instructions.
These words describe an intention for how we relate to the land: mutuality, interdependence, and communication. It’s an ongoing learning.
We invite you into this kind of relationship with the land, a weekend from 7 pm Friday to 4 pm Sunday. Expect a clear introduction, meditative time in the natural world, council meetings for gathering and deepening, a short outdoor work project, and closing circle. Meals, snacks, and simple sleeping arrangements.
We’re inviting you to join us in learning sacred and intimate relationship with the land. This is an act of trust. In joining us, please honor the land, the leaders, and yourself.
Approximate schedule:
- Friday evening – settle in, orientation, walk on the land, meditation instruction if needed, and sitting meditation.
- Saturday morning: early sitting, then breakfast, short talk, walk the land with awareness, discussion, meditation, mindful work.
- Saturday afternoon/evening: lunch break, work, supper, conversation, sitting meditation, sleep.
- Sunday: same as Saturday, ending at 4 after closing circle with snacks.
Probable tasks (depending on weather and other factors):
- storm damage repair
- foraging (berries and other possibilities)
- cooking foraged food
- garden work
Usually we focus on one area and give it our full attention. Because of the mixture of needs, we’re not predicting yet, but the matter of berries may affect our choices. The early walks are a beginning
Suggested donation is $120 for the weekend, including food and housing. Additional contributions are welcome to provide support for those who can’t pay the full cost, which includes a modest stipend for the teacher (Shodo Spring). No one will be turned away for inability to pay.
People with questions about accessibility also are invited to ask first.
